CBT, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, is a talking therapy which has been proven to help treat a wide range of emotional and physical health conditions in adults, young people and children.

In any situation how we think (cognitive) influences how we feel and what we do in response (behaviour).  When we experience distress the way we respond with our thoughts, feelings and behaviour can intensify our problems and we may feel stuck in certain patterns.

CBT can help you to have an understanding of your responses to stress and how they have developed. It can also help you develop more appropriate responses.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is considered among the most rapid in terms of results obtained. The average number of sessions clients receive (across all types of problems and approaches to CBT) is only 16.  Other forms of therapy, such as psychoanalysis, can take years.  What enables CBT to be briefer is its structured nature and use of 'homework' assignments.

CBT is time-limited in that I help clients understand at the very beginning of the therapy process that there will be a point when the formal therapy will end.  The ending of the formal therapy is a decision made by the therapist and client. Therefore, CBT is not an open-ended, never-ending process.

Cognitive behavioural therapists have a specific agenda for each session where techniques and concepts are offered. CBT focuses on the client's goals.

I do not tell my clients what their goals "should" be or what they "should" tolerate.

I am directive in the sense that I show my clients how to think and behave in ways to obtain what they want.

Therefore CBT therapists do not tell their clients what to do, more importantly, they teach their clients how to do.
